A few years ago, AI and ML scientists with big ideas struggled to get their hands on data sets big enough to train their systems. Now developers, architects and CIOs are working out how to integrate these technologies with their organisations.

Thanks to the rise of big data and the internet of things, there is no shortage of data, giving more and more organisations the opportunity to embed artificial intelligence into their systems and products. Hardware has become more and more efficient, so that even complex techniques such as neural networks can be broadly adopted.

Applications for machine learning-based approaches range from autonomous cars, to traffic flow management, from homes that learn when to turn up the heating or send for help, to intelligent agents who grant online assistance or make decisions that affect our legal, financial or medical lives.
