Phase 2 underway at Excel
Excel has appointed the architect, Grimshaw, and the planning and urban design firm, Urban Strategies, to carry out the design work for the proposed Phase 2 extension to the venue.
Phase 2 is intended to see Excel increase its event space to 100,000 square metres and could be completed by the end of 2009.
Grimshaw is to design the proposed 36,000 square metre extension to the existing building while Urban Strategies will work on the overall development of the campus.
Excel chief executive, Jamie Buchan, thinks the desire to grow shows that the venue is a serious and long-term player in the international exhibition and conference markets.
“These appointments signify the importance which Excel attributes to the design of Phase 2 and to the overall campus environment,” he says. “Between now and the 2012 Olympic Games, London has a unique opportunity to showcase the capital as the world’s leading business and event destination. Excel London will play a major part in this.”
