Leading furniture supplier hit by arson attack
Exhibition and events industry furniture supplier Europa was the victim of an arson attack recently, when one of its lorries was set ablaze outside its warehouse in Penge, South West London.
The attack on the vehicles, which were parked outside Europa’s premises during a weekend of exceptionally busy activity for the company, took place in the early hours of Saturday morning. The company’s Director, Stephen Murphy Jnr, was awoken by a call from the emergency services asking him to come down and assess the damage, just a couple of hours before he was due to travel to Hammersmith Town Hall to assist with Europa’s presence at the British Polish Chamber of Commerce exhibition.
“I know the strapline under the logo on our vehicles says ‘let’s make it happen’, but we didn’t expect that to be taken as ‘set a Europa truck on fire – let’s make it happen’” said a stunned Murphy. “Well at least now we can claim we’ve got some sizzling hot deals on furniture, available in any colour you like, as long as it’s black!”
Despite only one of the vehicles suffering damage in the attack, the cost of the fire is still expected to run to thousands of pounds, with a substantial number of furniture items being wrecked in the blaze. Local police confirmed that the incident was being treated as arson and is under investigation. (Related categories of interest see Furniture Hire and Exhibition Furniture)
