Pier restoration could provide businesses with conference facilities
<p>The owners of a pier near Swansea are hopeful that the building of conference facilities will help them finance the restoration of the local landmark.</p><p>Mumbles pier, which is 225m long, was built in 1898 and affords stunning views of Swansea Bay with Mumbles Lighthouse on one side and Port Talbot on the other.</p><p>However, its future has been threatened by a £4 million repair bill - which pier owners Ameco hope to cover by building a hotel with conference facilities.</p><p>While Swansea council has given the premise its seal of approval, it wants to canvass public opinion before more detailed plans are put forward.</p><p>"Redevelopment in Mumbles will play a big role in helping us realise that objective but it's vitally important the people of Swansea get an opportunity to have their say on any proposals," council leader Chris Holley told the BBC.</p><p>"All views will be taken on board and we'd encourage people to come forward with their feedback."</p><p>Swansea residents have until October 17th to make their views known.<br/><img alt="ADNFCR-1753-ID-18798521-ADNFCR" src="http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1753&it..." /></p>
