Serpentine Gallery puts display plinths to good use
A London gallery has used display plinths to showcase works during its very first exhibition.
The Serpentine Gallery has used a mixture of exhibition stands and display plinths for the new Real Design show, which has been curated by German industrial designer Konstantin Grcic and is the first contemporary design display at the venue.
Mr Grcic said that the items on each display plinth have a "real" quality, as they are mass-produced objects from the last ten years which have a practical function.
"What interests me about industrial design is how these things are made, in what material and how this has affected their language and their quality. Some objects are very technically-driven; the function really determines the object," he said.
Meanwhile, Chris Coker, managing director of exhibition furniture supplier Coker Exhibition Systems, recently said that demand for display stands has been high this year, with one client reportedly doubling its turnover after receiving so many orders at a recent show.
