The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog) has outlined its sustainability strategy for delivering an eco-friendly event in 2010.

Event organisers plan to ensure that zero waste goes to landfill and said that a 15 per cent reduction in carbon emissions on new builds has already been achieved.

It is the first time that a study into the potential carbon footprint of a summer Games has been undertaken.

Sebastian Coe, chair of Locog, said that sustainability had underpinned the project from the outset.

"From construction to how we will stage the Games in 2012, we're constantly looking at ways to ensure we're setting new standards in how major events are staged – responsibly, with legacy in mind," he explained.

The committee has looked at five key themes of sustainability - climate change, waste, biodiversity, inclusion and healthy living.

Locog recently invited event suppliers to bid for £700 million worth of goods and services contracts.
