Publishers give feedback on annual industry conference

Publishing chiefs have expressed their concerns that the cost and format of this year's British Book Industry Awards and conference could impact upon the success of next year's event.

The 2008 conference was held over two days in the city of Brighton, attracting strong numbers of industry professionals, with attendees from the retail sector up by seven per cent on the previous year.

However, according to the Bookseller, many publishing chiefs were unhappy about both the choice of location and the content of the seminars and talks on offer.

One managing director told the industry magazine: "It looks like our economy is heading towards a recession, and what did we get? Practically the same seminars on the environment and digital issues that we had last year."

In addition, it has been claimed that Brighton is not home to enough major retail chains, prompting calls for the event to be switched to London in the future.

The Trade Publishers Council (TPC) has confirmed that it has taken on board the views expressed and will enter into discussions regarding future conferences and events "with an open mind rather than a fixed agenda".
