Event organisers 'thrilled' at London Olympics interest
More than a million people have registered their interest in tickets for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Event organisers said they were "thrilled" that the "Sign Up" campaign, fronted by Olympic and Paralympic athletes, as well as TV personalities, has been such a success.
So far, 96 per cent of registrations have come from UK residents, with 32 per cent coming from Greater London, 27 per cent from the south-east and 41 per cent from the rest of the UK.
There has also been an even spread across the different sports, with 100,000 expressions of interest for each of the 26 Olympic disciplines.
"It should come as no surprise that the British public is so enthused by the prospect of world class sport coming to these shores," commented Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
Last month, the event organisers confirmed that more tickets would go on sale for the Games that originally stated, increasing from 7.7 million to eight million.
